Armed Forces Group Preston
The grand opening of the advice centre was held on Tuesday 10th April 2012 and was conducted by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Lord Shuttleworth (the advice centres Patron) and the Mayor of Preston Councillor Roberta Cartwright. The event was well supported with representatives from both civilian and armed forces welfare agencies all willing to provide assistance to the local armed forces and veteran community.
Initial funding for the organisation has been gained through the Armed Forces Champion of Lancashire County Council and the aspiration is to endeavour to self fund in the long term by attending local community events and hosting fund raising activities.
Since the opening the office has dealt with a variety of enquiries from ex-servicemen and women on various topics ranging from veteran badges to pension and housing enquiries. As word spreads of this new facility the office continues to get busier with telephone and drop in queries happening on a more frequent basis. The future aspiration of the organisation is to have its own website where enquiries can be directed as well as useful information posted periodically to make this valuable service more accessible.
The Armed Forces Group Preston has enjoyed a successful start and will hopefully evolve into a tried and tested signposting centre continuing to support the local ex-service community.
